From October to December, millions of straw-coloured fruit bats converge on the Mushitu Swamp Forest in northern Kasanka, orchestrating the world’s largest mammal migration in a breathtaking display of natural wonder.

Then venture into the mystical Bangweulu Wetlands in search of the elusive shoebill stork. Spend your nights camping within the heart of national parks, immersing yourself completely in nature’s wilderness.

Please note that on this Zambia bat migration safari, most days will be long and a good knowledge of off-road driving is beneficial. This adventure takes you deep into remote regions where proper 4×4 skills and stamina for extended travel days are essential for fully experiencing this magical wildlife spectacle.

Upon arriving in Lusaka, the excitement builds as you’re transferred to our campsite, a mere 15 minutes outside the city, nestled in beautifully shaded natural surroundings.

Eureka Camp offers a charmingly rustic experience, complete with clean facilities and hot running water for refreshing showers.

As the sun sets, we’ll gather around the campfire for our first dinner, lovingly prepared by our talented bush chef. The aroma of the delicious meal will fill the air as we share stories and laughter, igniting the spirit of adventure that lies ahead.

Day 2 | Lusaka – Mkushi

After an early breakfast filled with anticipation, we’ll set off for Mkushi, making a quick stop in Serenje to refuel our vehicles and stock up on supplies for the adventure ahead.

As we continue on our journey, we’ll arrive at our overnight campsite, conveniently nestled alongside the Great North Road within 160 hectares of protected indigenous forest. This enchanting sanctuary is home to the elusive Lord Derby’s Flying Squirrel, known for its unique membrane that connects its fore and hind legs, a true marvel of nature.

You’ll also be treated to the sight of a variety of vibrant bird species, including the stunning Violet-backed Sunbird, the charming Spotted Creeper, and the striking White-tailed Blue-Flycatcher.

Upon our arrival, you can enjoy a hot shower to refresh yourself before settling in with a refreshing drink. As night falls, we’ll gather around the campfire for a delicious dinner prepared by our talented bush chef, sharing stories and laughter under the starry Zambian sky.

This morning, we’ll rise early to enjoy a hearty breakfast before packing up and setting off for the enchanting Kasanka National Park.

Our campsite, nestled in a lush evergreen forest overlooking a serene swamp clearing favoured by the elusive Sitatunga, will serve as the perfect base for our adventures.

Conveniently located near the Bat Forest and the Fibwe Hide – an impressive 18-meter-high observation point perched in a majestic African Mahogany tree – you’ll have prime opportunities to witness the wonders of nature.

Picture yourself watching Sitatunga gracefully navigate the wetlands in the early morning light and then marvelling at the breathtaking spectacle of fruit bats taking flight at twilight, transforming the sky into a swirling mass of life.

After breakfast we’ll embark on a journey to the stunning Mutinondo Wilderness, where nature’s beauty awaits us at every turn. You’ll have the chance to explore this pristine conservation area at your own pace, whether you prefer a leisurely walk through lush landscape or a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Mutinondo River.

As the day winds down, we’ll gather around the crackling fire at camp, sharing stories and savouring a delicious dinner under the stars.

After an early breakfast, we’ll embark on an exciting journey north to the legendary Bangweulu Wetlands, a Ramsar Convention Site and one of the most important wetlands in the world.

Over the next two days, you’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the serene beauty of the African bush, surrounded by a breathtaking tapestry of wildlife. Explore the park at your own pace, whether by taking guided bird walks to witness the vibrant avian life or gliding through the tranquil waters in mokoros as you search for the elusive and magnificent shoebill stork.

This is a unique opportunity to connect with the rich biodiversity of this exceptional wetland ecosystem, where every moment invites you to appreciate the wonders of nature.

After an early breakfast, we’ll make our way back down the Great North Road to our welcoming campground for the evening.

Upon arrival, you can indulge in a hot shower to refresh and rejuvenate, after a day of adventure. As the sun sets, grab a refreshing drink and unwind, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere. Dinner, expertly prepared by our talented bush chef, will be served around the campfire.

Savor a leisurely breakfast and embrace a slow morning, soaking in the last moments of Zambia’s beauty.

We’ll then journey south back to Lusaka along the smooth, tarred Great North Road, making our way to Eureka Camping Park.

Here, you can indulge in a hot shower to refresh yourself and treat yourself to an ice-cold beer, a perfect way to unwind.

As the evening sets in, we’ll gather for dinner (own expense), sharing stories and reliving the incredible memories from our adventure.
